Similar Crochet Techniques - Different Name, Different Purpose -Crochet Decrease vs. Crochet Cluster - Crochet Tip #62

The crochet decrease may be similar or the same as a cluster of stitches.  Keep in mind that you can decrease by skipping stitches as well, but with this tip we are addressing the stitches joined at the top. The purpose of the stitch is what will make them different, while the anatomy and structure of the stitch may be identical.  It is something to keep in mind and to help prevent confusion.  I am providing two video examples.  The first is the Double Crochet Decrease.  The second is the crochet cluster.  A cluster can consist of a couple stitches to many stitches.

Ten Terrific Things About Me

In keeping with S's post...

1.  I am an awesome and fun mommy.
2.  I am a great organizer... sorting is my specialty ;)
3.  I am artistic and crafty (painting, drawing, pen and ink, sculpting, photography, graphic design, paper crafts, crochet, stained glass, wire sculpting... name it, I've done it!)
4.  I am a good daughter... I call my parents every day and make sure all is well.
5.  I have an eye for design... interior decorating?  Yeah, I can do it!
6.  I'm a great listener and, if needed, tend to give good advice as well!
7.  I am handy!  I don't need a man to fix it!
8.  I have a good sense of humor and I like to think I'm witty.
9.  I have a way with words and languages.
10.  I'm a darn good blogger!

Did I forget anything?  ;)

How to Crochet with Several Strands of yarn

This is a demonstration on how to work with several strands of yarn at the same time.  It is not an actual project.  Working with several strands is slow and may cause discomfort in your wrist if you are not used to working with several strands.  You will want to take breaks and stretch your arm out on occasion to reduce potential discomfort.

The two following links will advance you to the segments in the video, for attaching more yarn and hiding the yarn tails.

Count Your Blessings Tuesdays

Today I am grateful for:
  • whole days spent in pajamas.
  • T's sense of humor.... I think we have a class clown on our hands!
  • hubby that goes out to get me medicine when I'm sick.
  • people who appreciate my photography work enough to give me a tip!
  • throwing rocks, dancing for no reason, nature expeditions, sitting outside in the rain, splashing in puddles, getting dirty, laughing for the sake of laughing... living in the moment ;)
  • 20 more days....

FPDC - Front Post Double Crochet - Video Tutorial
Left Hand  Front Post Double Crochet - Video Tutorial

Purpose for Chain at the beginning of round - Many times I will use a chain at the beginning of the round. It will not count as a stitch.  I use it as a step up so I can work the full crochet stitch in place of the traditional chain.  I feel this technique has a neater appearance than working a chain.  You may use a chain 2 or 3 if you prefer using traditional crochet techniques.

Attach the slip knot to the crochet hook. Chain 4, join with the beginning chain.

Round 1:   chain, this will not count as a stitch, Work 16 double crochet through the loop. Join with the beginning stitch.  (16 stitches total)

Round 2:   This will be an increase round with double crochet and front post double crochet.
Chain, this will not count as a stitch, work a double crochet in the same stitch, work a FPDC(front post double crochet) around the stitch and chain1 on round 1.  *work a double crochet in the same stitch, work a FPDC(front post double crochet) around the stitch on round 1. Continue around  from * to the beginning, SL ST-slip stitch to join with the beginning stitch.  (32 stitches total - 16 DC-double crochet, 16 FPDC-Front Post double crochet)  Cut the yarn and change color.

Round 3:  Attach the new color of yarn with a slip knot to the crochet hook.   Chain, this will not count as a stitch, work a double crochet in the same stitch, work 2 DC-Double crochet in the next stitch. *Work 1 DC-Double Crochet in the next stitch, work 2 DC-double crochet in the next stitch.  Continue around to the beginning from*, join with the beginning stitch. Cut the yarn and change color.  (48 Stitches total)

Round 4: Attach the first color of yarn with a slip knot to the crochet hook.  Attach the yarn normally and align even, to the stitch above the FPDC on Round 2.  Chain 1, work a SC-Single Crochet in the same stitch.  Work an elongated FPDC-Front Post Double Crochet around the FPDC on Round 2.  Chain 3, Skip 2 stitches, *work a SC- single crochet in the next stitch. Work an elongated FPDC-Front Post Double Crochet around the FPDC on Round 2. Chain 3, Skip 2 stitches, continue around from *, join with the beginning single crochet. (There will be a total of 16 chain 3 loops with a single crochet/elongated Front Post Double Crochet)

Round 5: SL ST-Slip Stitch in to the CH-chain 3 space. Chain 1, *work 3 DC-Double Crochet, CH-chain 2, 3 DC-Double Crochet in the same chain 3 space. This creates the corner point. Work 3 HDC-Half Double Crochet in the next chain 3. Work 3 SC-Single Crochet in the next CH-chain 3. Work 3 HDC-Half Double Crochet in the next chain 3. Complete 4 times total from * for each side.  Sl St-Slip Stitch to join with the beginning stitch.

You can stop at round 5 or continue with one more round.

Round 6:  CH 1, work a DC in each of the remaining 2 stitches.  *In the corner ch-chain 2 work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC.  Work 1 DC-Double Crochet in each stitch across.  There will be 15 stitches.  Complete 3 times from*.  In the corner ch-chain 2 work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC. Work 1 DC-Double Crochet in each of the next 13 stitches.  Join with the beginning stitch.  Cut the yarn, secure and sew in all of the tails.

Count Your Blessings Tuesdays

Today I am grateful for:

  • weekends away
  • finding long lost friends
  • a tan on my pale, pale skin.  Sadly, I'm still pale.
  • seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.  June 23rd can't come fast enough.
  • picking up crocheting again!  Instead of being online I'm on the couch with yarn and a hook like an old lady ;)  Sadly, I'm doing it for my photography obsession... I want to make blankets for photo shoots of babies.

Thứ Hai, 17 tháng 5, 2010

Things I learned this weekend:

1.  I can live without a camera and laptop.  I actually should spend less time on the laptop while at home.
2.  I miss "us"... while C and I have our date nights on Fridays, it's not the same.  I really need to make a conscious effort to focus more on C and be more thoughtful.
3.  I was made to live by the beach.  It would be my dream to be able to live within 20 minutes of a beach.
4.  I don't need to plan everything.
5.  A little PDA never hurt anyone.
6.  We need to do this again... not necessarily to OC but just go and have "us" time without any other distractions.

God knows what He's doing...

The night before our road trip to OC, I was looking for ocean photography tips and looking through other's photos of OC.  I packed up all my photo equipment and put it in the car in excitement.  We cross over the bridge and Ocean City is in view... I go into my camera bag, pull out the camera and... NO MEMORY CARD.  I think part of my soul died at that moment but I was determined to enjoy myself.  I decided to take that as a sign from above... that God was telling me to put the camera down and enjoy myself and that I did.  Here's a summary of our weekend:

Friday:  Put feet in sand.  Walked the boardwalk for a while before realizing we should turn around and get the car (our hotel was on 28th street... the boardwalk starts at 1st or so....).  We had dinner at Phillips (wouldn't recommend it... it wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing), played mini golf at Embers (I won by one point!) and then headed to the boardwalk for dessert at Dumsers and to walk around.  We headed back to the hotel and sat on their awesome deck with awesome rocking chairs and had some wine as we watched a lightning storm that was off in the ocean.  We slept with the windows open so we could hear/smell the ocean.

Saturday:  Woke up to the sunrise and went out to the beach to watch the sun come up.  We came back and had breakfast at The Dough Roller (awesome!) then went back to the beach to lay out, walk the edge and collect seashells.  We went back to the room and had a nap after being out for a few hours.  Our friends B and W called and met us at the boardwalk where we went to Harrison's for lunch (expensive but worth it) and we hit up Dumsers and a few shops on the boardwalk.  We then went back to the beach to lay out.  There was a guy digging a hole near us and he dug the hole SO deep you couldn't see his head.  W got in the hole and took a picture saying she was digging her way back home (China).  We played mini golf again at Embers (I lost by MANY points) and then headed to Mackey's for dinner and to watch the sun setting on the bay side.  We went back to the hotel for the pool and hot tub for a while.  Then B and W left so we went to Dumsers again (forget the diet...) and I had the most amazing sundae ever.  We went back to the hotel to hear the live music and hang out on the deck.

Sunday:  Went to The Dough Roller again for breakfast, checked out and then headed to the OUTLETS!  Woo!  Got some clothes and then came home.  T came about two hours after we got home.  He had a good time as well.  Everyone is happy :)

Here are the few photos I was able to capture with my PHONE:

Feet in sand!

Sunrise from our balcony

Sunrise from the beach

Yummy breakfast

Without a camera... this is what I resort to...

Our sand sculpture

Feet in the sand...

Us :)  PALE

Still pale

Later that day... W and B!

Sunset on the bay and B

YUM!  Malt balls, vanilla and chocolate.

Do I HAVE to go back to work tomorrow!?

Fitness Thursdays

Still working out and still trying to be good about what I eat (with minor setbacks like the Snickers bar I had to get yesterday).  It's getting harder and harder to find the motivation to work out especially now that T goes to bed later so that means that I get to work out at 9pm.   I don't know about you but at 9pm, working out is the LAST thing I want to do.  Thankfully C and I have been pushing each other to work out although sometimes we conspire to NOT work out (only sometimes!).

Oh!!  On top of working out, I got a 100% A in my grad class this semester.  Yeah, I rock.

Count Your Blessings Tuesdays

Today I am grateful for:

  • having been blessed with the opportunity to be a mother and to experience what true, unguarded love feels like.
  • being able to spread my love through acts of kindness for others.  It is a great feeling to do something "just because" and not expect anything in return.
  • the anticipation you feel before a vacation... a MUCH needed one at that.  I can't wait for OC with C and I'm hoping the weather holds up.
  • unexpected flowers on a Tuesday morning-- orange roses!  Thanks SW!
  • friends... because, unlike my family, they call me ;)

Squeaky Crochet Hooks - What is your solution?

I live in a warm weather climate where we may have humidity for 7-9 months out of the year.  This creates the squeak with the crochet hook.  I have used powder which helps a little bit, but it makes a mess. Do any of you have a solution that has worked for squeaky crochet hooks?

YouTube Video Watch Page - Finding the Link to Crochet Written Instructions

It has been a few weeks since YouTube switched everyone over to the new video watch page. I want to point out that the video details have moved to the bottom of the video now. The video details are where I will post live links to my crochet blog and the written instructions for the video.  There are little arrows on the video watch page that provide details about the video. The two red arrows on each image are pointing to the video detail arrows.  The arrows on the left are the video details. The image on the left has a red arrow next to the video details, not expanded.   The image on the right has a red arrow next the video details expanded.  I hope this will make it easier to find the link for the written instructions.

You're never too big

to be a mama's girl or to sit on your mom's lap ;)

Siempre has estado a mi lado y me has apollado en todos mis sueños.  Espero que cuando tenga tu edad, pueda ser mitad de la mujer que eres.  Te quiero con todo mi corazón.  ~Gury

Boo and Yay

The Boo:  I was supposed to do a shoot with S and fam today but the weather called for thunderstorms and wind today so we canceled.  Guess who woke up to blue skies and sunshine?  Yeah... I'm never listening to the weather people again.

The Yay:  I spent the day with my two men and got a bit spoiled.  We had Chipotle for lunch, time at the park, Ritas and I got this from the Swarovski store:

It's very sparkly.  Thank you C!!!

Semesters Work

If you want to see the project I worked on this semester with my group, check out this link:

You can hear my voice during the intro parts-- you know you want to hear it ;)

In this class I learned NOTHING about project management except maybe how to know when one sucks... and I learned how to not kill people but I think the class being online helped in that sense.
